🚗 EVs — Top 5 Questions
• Charging costs? ~£3–5 at home; as little as £1–2 overnight on a smart tariff - I charged the car at 1p per KW at the weekend, meaning 100miles at 30p
• Range anxiety? Almost always gone within the first few weeks - it helps to choose a car with a heat pump for winter range ease
• Long journeys? Totally doable with a little planning — apps do the hard work like ZapMap, and, increasingly, Google Maps
• Battery ethics? Real concerns, improving supply chains — worth asking manufacturers directly and doing research!

Charged Up: Everything You Wanted to Know About Going Electric
Petrol prices are rising again — and according to the RAC, they are expected to keep climbing. For drivers still reliant on the forecourt, that means higher costs almost immediately.
But an increasing number of people are discovering that electric driving operates on an entirely different logic: one that isn't tied to oil price volatility in the same way.
We have been driving electric vehicles for eleven years. In that time, we have navigated range anxiety (mostly unfounded), home charging, public charging networks, long motorway trips, ethical sourcing questions about batteries and supply chains, and the genuine pleasure of a much quieter, smoother drive.
There are very few questions we haven't been asked — or haven't asked ourselves. We don't have the perfect setup of having a drive - however, we do have a wallbox charger.
Recent data from a survey of over 4,000 Octopus EV drivers found that 77% feel protected from sudden fuel price spikes. The cost comparison is striking: typical EV drivers spend around £300–£400 a year on electricity versus approximately £1,700 on petrol. Even higher-mileage drivers often find the savings significant.

Whole-Home Decarbonisation
We are registered with NESTA's Visit a Heat Pump programme — a national initiative connecting people curious about heat pumps with households that actually have one running in a real home. We are proud to be part of it.
But we are also, frankly, a fairly unusual household. We have an electric vehicle, solar panels, battery storage, and an air source heat pump — all integrated and working together. It is a combination that gives us a genuinely complete view of what whole-home decarbonisation looks and feels like in practice: the running costs, the seasonal rhythms, the occasional head-scratching, but also the sense of satisfaction at those times when we are consuming in rhythm with the UK Electrical Grid and peak/off peak energy.
Between us, we have now answered — we think it is fair to say — pretty much every question there is to ask about heat pumps in a domestic setting. Radiators vs underfloor heating! Noise. Planning permission. Interaction with solar. Running costs in winter. What happens on the coldest days. Whether it works in an older property. We have lived it all.
In this session, we will cover:
